“I wish we’d offered virtual Agile training years ago.” – me, to myself

Technology and masterful facilitation make online courses as engaging and educational as in-person classes. In addition to being germ-free, virtual classes aren’t restricted to participants within a single geographic location. This makes for a fantastic opportunity to share experiences and ideas with fellow Agilists and other professionals around the world, creating a global Agile community. Excella Training now offers public classes virtually, including courses certified through entities such as the Scrum Alliance, ICAgile, SAFe, and Kanban University. Also, we plan to offer our unique, customized workshops online, such as our Agile, Scrum, and Kanban in a day class and our User Story Workshop.

Imagine spending a day or two in workgroups learning Agile practices, participating in group activities, and connecting with people from all over the world. This is an amazing opportunity to learn from a variety of perspectives and build a more diverse digital business network. At the end of each class, we invite participants to connect via LinkedIn, if they would like to continue collaborating.

Excella Training also offers private online class opportunities. Private training is extremely valuable because it gets all players working on a given product or service in the same “room.” In private training, the content and discussions are naturally tailored to your company’s specific type of work and distinct challenges. For companies whose employees aren’t all working in a single location, especially during COVID-19, virtual training can bring them together. Imagine an engaging Agile training where everyone in your organization, regardless of where they live, are together in the same virtual room, each actively involved and contributing. It’s not just an opportunity to learn about how to improve your work through Agile, but also an opportunity to practice meaningful and sustainable virtual teamwork while demonstrating your professional development values.

Trust is essential to a thriving collaborative Agile organization, but building trust and comradery among coworkers takes time. When people share a slice of their true selves to others and are accepted for who they are, the process of developing trust begins.

Virtual training gives us the unique opportunity to share a piece of our true selves. When we run an online training, we strongly encourage all participants to turn on their laptop cameras. Inviting coworkers into your homes can be scary. I always do a camera check before each online event. I make sure I look presentable on camera, and my room doesn’t appear too much like the total disaster it is. On the bright side, when we do let people see us in our natural habitat, it automatically creates a greater connection with each other.

In virtual training, I love seeing participant’s pets and family. I love to see the interesting artifacts they have displayed in their rooms. It makes me want to get to know them better. (e.g., I never knew my colleague was a hurdy-gurdy enthusiast…and frankly, I didn’t even know what a hurdy-gurdy was— until I participated in a virtual training with him! Thanks for sharing, Patrick!). Being in people’s homes virtually also makes me realize how alike we all are. I’m not the only one whose dogs bark when the mail truck arrives, nor am I the only one who has weird decorations on her wall. I’m not the only one who enjoys a Dr. Pepper at 7:00 AM. These types of interactions build trust and team relationships very effectively with minimal effort.

I strongly encourage each and every one of you to take advantage of virtual training. It is a fantastic way to learn, build social and business networks around the globe, and create better working relationships with team members.
